Listen to Mama

The post I made yesterday got me to thinking about things moms say to their kids, aka momisms. As I thought about the various momisms, I realized how many of them deal with listening. I’m sure a lot (if not all) of these will sound familiar:

– What did I say?

– What part of NO don’t you understand?

– What did I say the FIRST time?

– If I’ve told you once, I’ve told you a thousand times.

– How many times do I have to tell you?

– I’m not going to tell you again.

– Do I make myself clear?

– Do you hear me?

– It’s like I’m talking to a brick wall.

– Do you hear anything I’m saying?

– Would you just listen to me?

– I tried to tell you.

– I told you so.

– It didn’t have to be this hard – if you would have just listened to me!

Oh, if children would just listen to their mama, the pain that could be avoided! But kids often think they know better than their moms and sometimes just have to learn things the hard way.

Isn’t it kind of the same with us and God? We still try to do things our way instead of God’s way. Even though His way is better, sometimes we still don’t listen. Somehow we still think we know better. And sometimes we end up having to learn the hard way, when so much pain could have been avoided if we had just listened to Him.

Yesterday I spoke about how I should have listened to my mama. That understanding came with time, which proved true something else my mom used to say, “I know you don’t understand this now, but you will when you get older.”

As usual, my mom was right. And I later found myself repeating the same thing to my own kids. Because with time, we gain wisdom. That’s the reason moms know better than their kids. That’s the reason kids should listen to their mama!

And as much as mothers know, God knows even more. God doesn’t just know better, God knows best.

And hopefully the older we get, the better we’ll get at listening to Him.

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord [that is, accept their guidance and discipline as His representatives], for this is right [for obedience teaches wisdom and self-discipline].” ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭6‬:‭1‬ ‭(AMP‬‬)

“Those who listen to instruction will prosper; those who trust the Lord will be joyful.” Proverbs‬ ‭16‬:‭20‬ ‭(NLT‬‬)
