Just Believe

Have you ever felt like others were receiving miracles while you were left waiting? And perhaps while you were waiting, the time passed for what you were hoping for, and it died.

I can relate. And as I was reading Mark 5:21-43 recently, I thought perhaps that’s how Jairus felt too. Jairus’ daughter was gravely ill. He went to see Jesus and asked Jesus to come home with him to heal his daughter.

Jesus agreed and went with Jairus. But as they traveled, a large crowd followed and pressed around Jesus. A woman was in the crowd who had suffered greatly for 12 years. She knew if she could just touch Jesus’ clothes, she would be healed.

And that’s exactly what happened – the woman touched Jesus’ cloak and was immediately healed. Jesus, realizing power had gone out of Him, stopped to asked who had touched His clothes and began looking around. The woman finally came forward and told her story. To which Jesus replied that her faith had healed her.

By this time, some others had come to report that Jairus’ daughter had died. They told Jairus that there was no need to bother Jesus anymore. But ignoring what they said, Jesus told Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”

Jesus and Jairus continued on, along with a few of Jesus’ disciples. Upon arriving at Jairus’ home, Jesus saw a commotion of people crying and wailing loudly. Jesus went to them and said, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.” But the people laughed at Him.

So Jesus dismissed them. Then Jesus, His disciples, and the girl’s parents went to where the girl was. Taking her by the hand, Jesus said, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!” Immediately she stood up and walked. And those around were completely astonished.

Perhaps the same can be said of us, if we will do as Jesus instructed Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”

Just because something seems dead doesn’t mean that’s the end. Jesus may have a bigger miracle in store, if we just believe.
