Through the Fog

As my son and I traveled out of town for his surgical consultation this morning, we drove through a thick fog for almost the entire trip. The fog circled all around us preventing any view of the surrounding landscape. Visibility was so limited that we could barely see the road in front of us. Any cars ahead were only visible as we came right up on them, so we had to drive a little slower.

It’s a strange feeling driving in something like that. It’s hard to get your bearings and to know where you are. And if you didn’t know any better, it could seem as if you’d drive through the fog right off into the abyss.

But we carried on, because we could trust that the road would be there. And thankfully I’d driven this road many times before, so I knew where I was going even though I couldn’t see very far in front of me.

It occurred to me how this was a good representation of life these past several years. My family has faced so many times of uncertainty. It has often felt like we were living in a fog, where we couldn’t see beyond what was right in front of us. Where the landscape all around us was obliterated. Where we were forced to slow down and focus only on the road ahead. Where it felt like we might fall off into the abyss.

But, like the road we were on today, we’ve traveled this road of uncertainty many times now, and we know we’ll get where we’re going. For God has proven Himself faithful time and time again. He has been with us each mile of this journey and has seen us through each and every circumstance.

And just as we could trust the road ahead to be there on our drive today, we can trust God to be there in all of life’s uncertainties. Even when we can’t see very far in front of us, we can trust God with where we’re going. Even when our eyes can’t see the way ahead, we can trust that God has already paved the way.

We simply need to keep trusting God, and keep moving forward.

“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” ‭Hebrews‬ ‭11‬:‭1‬ ‭(NIV‬‬)
